Mohawk Industries, Inc.’s (MHK - Free Report) adjusted earnings of $3.50 per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $3.46 by 1.2%. Adjusted earnings exclude restructuring, acquisition and other charges. Earnings increased 17% year over year backed by strong operating margins.
Total revenue of $2,294 million surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2,246 million by 2.16%.
Revenues also increased 7% year over year driven by higher sales across all the segments, especially Flooring Rest of the World.
Adjusted gross profit of $744 million increased 10.1% year over year.
Adjusted selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses were up 2.7% to $377.2 million from the prior year quarter.
Adjusted operating income at a constant exchange rate increased 21% to $373.6 million. Adjusted operating margin grew 160 basis points (bps) to 16%, mainly because of higher sales volume and productivity.
Global Ceramic: Net sales in this segment amounted to $822 million, up 4% year over year. Sales were up 6% on a constant days and constant currency basis. The North American ceramic business gained traction during the quarter. New home construction and the commercial sector outperformed residential remodeling and sales growth through Mohawk’s service centers exceeded other channels.
Flooring Rest of the World: Net sales at this segment totaled $463.5 million, up 15% year over year. Sales improved 8% on a constant days and constant currency basis driven by strong performance of premium laminate and LVT.
Flooring North America: Net sales at this segment increased 6% year over year to $1,008.6 million. On a constant days and constant currency basis, sales improved 7%. Strong commercial carpet and rug sales offset softer residential carpet sales. Product innovation continues to drive its top line business, and recent introductions comprised about one-third of its soft surface sales during the period.
Fourth-Quarter Outlook
In order to achieve long-term growth, the company is expanding its differentiated product line and working on the capacity and efficiency of its operations.
Mohawk is also introducing distinctive collections to boost sales. It is aggressively implementing productivity improvements across all businesses, and bringing new capacity online to support growth.
The company is currently exploring numerous investment options to ramp up expansion, including green field opportunities and acquisitions.
Taking these factors into account, the EPS guidance for the fourth quarter is at $3.16 to $3.25, which represents a 12% to 15% increase over the fourth quarter of 2015 EPS, excluding restructuring charges.
