CBOE Holdings, Inc. (CBOE - Free Report) reported trading volume for Dec 2016 as well as 2016. For December, the company witnessed trading volume of 96.1 million, up 7% from the year-ago month, but down 18% from the prior month. In 2016, the recorded trading volume was 1,184.6 million, up 1% year over year.
The Chicago, IL-based exchange operator’s total options contracts of 91.5 million grew 7% from the prior-year month, but fell 18% from the prior month. However, total futures contracts declined 6% from the preceding month and 25% year over year to 4.3 million.
Further, total average daily volume (ADV), comprising both options and futures contracts, for Dec 2016 increased 12% from Dec 2015, but declined 18% from the prior month to 4.6 million. In addition, ADV inched up 1% year over year to 4.7 million for 2016.
CBOE Holdings, owner of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, witnessed several trading records in 2016. Total volume and ADV in index options trading reached new all-time highs for the fourth consecutive year with 430.7 million and 1.7 million contracts, respectively. Both were up 6% year over year.
Similarly, Total volume and ADV in S&P 500® Index options trading hit a new all-time high for the fourth consecutive year in 2016 with 258 million and 1 million contracts, respectively. Both grew 9% from 2015 level.
Moreover, CBOE Holdings, in its release provided fourth-quarter 2016 average revenue per contract (RPC) by product category outlook. It anticipates total average RPC to be 37.5 cents in the quarter. This is in line with the two months ended Nov 30 figure.
In 2016, CBOE Holdings’ shares gained 13.9%, underperforming the 18.7% gain for the Zacks-categorized Securities Exchanges industry. Nonetheless, the shares have been largely witnessing a rising trend, post U.S. election.
