Alphabet Inc.’s (GOOGL - Free Report) Google has submitted updated plans for its iconic office complex in Silicon Valley.
The 18.6 acre Google Charleston East office space is the search giant’s first ground-up project. Initially announced in 2015, the project has gone through several revisions after facing problems with the city planning board.
Over the last six months, the stock has outperformed the Zacks Internet-Services industry. It returned 7.5% compared to the industry’s gain of 3.3%.
Impressive and Futuristic
The new campus will resemble a circus tent supported by slanted tent poles. The 2-story office building will be spread across a 595,000 square feet area with the capacity to house around 3000 employees.
The ground floor will be publicly accessible and include walking trails, public parks, retail space, food stalls and lots of greenery. The campus is expected to be completed within 30 months.
The centerpiece of the office space that Google describes as "photovoltaic integrated canopy skin" will generate renewable energy through solar power and have indoor climate, sound and air quality control mechanisms.
To further decrease consumption of electricity, smile-shaped clerestories spanning two sides of each 102-foot bay will bring natural light in to the building.
Google’s expansion plan in north Mountain View is a reminder that Silicon Valley based tech giants are striving to build more impressive and futuristic office spaces.
In 2015, Facebook moved to a 430,000 square foot extensive campus. Also, Apple’s (AAPL - Free Report) huge spaceship-like campus in Cupertino whose construction begun in 2011 is finally shaping up. Last year, Uber was issued permits to build a new futuristic headquarter in the form of two adjoining transparent glass office buildings.
When we look at the design and features, it seems that Google is emphasizing on fostering a sense of community, respecting nature as well as mirroring its culture of innovation through bold infrastructure and architecture.
It appears that with the new office space, Google is trying to build a highly flexible workplace, capable of adapting to changing business needs on the one hand and serving the local communities on the other.
The company swapped lands with Microsoft’s (MSFT - Free Report) Linkedin last year in a deal that helped both companies make uninterrupted progress with their respective construction plans.
