Total “enablements” were nearly 205,000, with 185,000 of these enabled locations in the company’s 16 retained states. Operating income was $912 million, down 9% from the prior-year quarter’s levels. Adjusted EBITDA (excluding special items) slipped to $1.811 billion from $2.109 billion for respective margins of 39.3% and 42.8%, owing to the closure of the CAF II program in 2021.

In the second quarter, Lumen generated $1.396 billion of net cash from operations compared with $1.639 billion a year ago.
Free cash flow (excluding cash special items) for the year was $668 million compared with $1.044 billion in the year-ago quarter.
As of Jun 30, 2022, the company had $360 million in cash and cash equivalents with $27,965 million of long-term debt compared with the respective tallies of $366 million and $28,397 million as of Mar 31, 2022.
2022 Outlook
For 2022, Lumen continues to expect adjusted EBITDA in the range of $6.9-$7.1 billion. Free cash flow is projected to be between $2 billion and $2.2 billion.
Capital expenditures are estimated between $3.2 billion and $3.4 billion. The effective income tax rate for the full year is estimated to be nearly 26%.
