Gamers will soon be able to live stream World of Warcraft, Diablo and a host of other Blizzard Entertainment’s games on their Facebook timelines thanks to a new deal between the social media giant and the video game publisher.
Blizzard Entertainment, a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc and Facebook have struck a deal whereby gamers can use their Facebook Login to access Blizzard Entertainment’s PC games like the latest release, Overwatch along with other popular titles like World of Warcraft, Heroes of the Storm, Hearthstone, Diablo III, and StarCraft II from the latter half of this month. Moreover, for long term gains, Blizzard Entertainment said that it is also in the process of “incorporating Facebook’s Live API in order to create its own “Go Live” streaming functionality for its games.”
The collaboration will result in Blizzard’s games gaining more exposure as a result of Facebook’s gargantuan user base of 1.65 billion. As for Facebook, the deal with an AAA rated video game publisher will enhance its platform capabilities by making “high-demand entertainment content” available on its platform. Blizzard Entertainment and Facebook have already hosted a lot of live stream events including Heroes of the Dorm and the Overwatch launch event.
Facebook’s deal with Blizzard Entertainment is likely to give Amazon’s (AMZN - Free Report) Twitch TV and Alphabet’s (GOOGL - Free Report) YouTube some serious competition. YouTube remains the undisputed leader in video watching while Twitch is a leader in video game live streaming.
As per Facebook, “650 million people play games connected to Facebook every month across web, mobile, and console”.
Facebook is going full throttle with its video streaming plans. This is because video ads generate more revenues than its photo and text based substitutes. As a result, Facebook is trying to incorporate more and more video oriented content to bring in more ad dollars. Moreover, its “live” feature is emerging as a terrific opportunity.
Recently, the company expanded Facebook Live, (its live video format) to all users and not just celebrities and added a plethora of new features. These include enabling broadcast for a Group or Event and at the same time allowing audience to respond to the live broadcast in real time through Live Reactions (same as in the news feed Reactions).
At present, Facebook carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
