Nissan, Takata Face Criminal Charges in Japan for Airbag Flaw
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (NSANY - Free Report) and Takata Corp are facing a criminal complaint in Japan. The suit was filed as the passenger-side airbag made by Takata exploded in a Nissan X-Trail sport-utility vehicle during a crash, thereby injuring a Japanese woman. This is the first case filed in Japan for these defective airbags.
According to media reports, the woman was injured in Oct 2015, in Shizuoka Prefecture, Central Japan. The metal fragments which injured her head and wrist were from the airbag inflator. The case was lodged on May 30, 2016. Takata announced that it will fully cooperate and investigate the accident. Nissan will also cooperate for this investigation.
The auto industry is under pressure due to a series of recalls by different companies over faulty Takata airbags. Safety recalls dent the brand image of a company and add to expenses. Recently, six automakers announced that they will be recalling around 2.5 million more vehicles in the U.S. due to flawed Takata airbag inflators.
Takata airbag inflators explode with excessive force, throwing metal fragments into a vehicle at passengers and the driver. These defective airbag inflators have been linked to 13 deaths worldwide and more than 100 injuries. While 11 deaths have been confirmed to be due to these inflators, authorities are still investigating the causes behind 2 deaths in Malaysia.
Takata uses ammonium nitrate to inflate airbags in a crash. However, the chemical can deteriorate over time when exposed to high heat and humidity.
Currently, Nissan carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Some better-ranked automobile stocks include Lear Corp. (LEA - Free Report) , Oshkosh Corporation (OSK - Free Report) and Superior Industries International, Inc. (SUP - Free Report) . All these stocks sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
