ON Semiconductor's Module to Build Efficient BLDC Solutions
Read MoreHide Full Article
ON Semiconductor Corp. (ON - Free Report) has introduced STK984-190-E, an automotive Power Integrated Module (PIM) that is optimized for driving 3-phase brushless DC motors in modern automotive applications. Notably, this module consists of six 40 V, 30 A MOSFETs that are configured as a three-phase bridge along with an additional 40 V, 30 A high-side reverse battery protection MOSFET.
One of the most significant trends observed in automotive electronics is the electrification of auxiliary units and replacement of mechanical components such as the hydraulic power steering by electric designs.
The introduction of the STK984-190-E module is a step in that direction as it can be used in 12 V automotive electric motor drive applications such as windscreen wipers, fans and electric pumps having wattage of up to 300 W. Additionally, the module can also be used to build highly efficient brushless DC (BLDC) solutions having enhanced thermal performance, small PCB that takes up less space and weighs less and in-built diagnostics for monitoring purposes.
Benefits
Some of the benefits of using the module are as follows:
Lower Costs: By using the module, one can reduce component count, one of the advantages of which is lower costs.
Reduced Power Loss: The direct bonded copper (DBC) substrate within the module facilitates reduced thermal resistance, thereby lowering the operating temperature of the MOSFETs. As a result, there is less power loss.
Improved Reliability: Due to the DBC substrate, power losses are kept under check, reducing temperature fluctuations in during operation.
Saves Space: The compact size of the module, its ability to replace a larger number of discrete components saves space while its strong thermal performance requires a smaller heat sink, further reducing space requirements.
Zacks Rank
At present, ON Semiconductor has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Some better-ranked stocks in the broader technology space are EarthLink Holdings Corp. , sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) and MaxLinear, Inc. (MXL - Free Report) and Semtech Corp. (SMTC - Free Report) , both carrying a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
