Cover glass giant Corning Inc. (GLW - Free Report) recently took the wraps off Gorilla Glass SR+. This new version of Gorilla Glass has been designed especially for wearables, enabling these to better bear the impact of smacks, knocks and scrapes.
Improved Features
Based on results of lab tests, Gorilla Glass SR+ is expected to deliver 70% better damage tolerance and 25% better surface reflection in comparison to similar products available in the market. This will drastically reduce visible scratches while boosting optical performance, outdoor readability and battery life of the gadgets.
Project Phire Making Steady Progress
Corning launched Project Phire in 2015 with a view to take scratch resistance technology to the next level, leveraging on its leading glass science and fusion manufacturing technology. The company continues to launch updated versions of glass products, indicating that it is well ahead of its peers.
Its director of innovation products, Scott Forester sounded upbeat on Corning’s cutting edge technology, which he says is not available with any other company in the same space.

Corning, a pioneer of the glass cover industry, started operations 10 years ago and never allowed any other company to take away its leading position. Corning Gorilla Glass has been used in over 1,800 product models across 40 major brands, totaling 4.5 billion devices worldwide.
The wearable technology space is fast growing and it seems that Corning is all set to increase its stake in this space. Samsung’s Gear S3 smartwatch, slated to roll out this fall, will be the first gadget to feature Gorilla Glass SR+.
