Factors to Note Ahead of DLB’s Q1 Earnings

Steady momentum across Dolby Atmos, imaging patents and Dolby Vision is likely to have cushioned the company’s first-quarter top-line performance as it gains market share in music, sports and automotive verticals. Synergies from acquisitions are likely to have acted as another tailwind.

The acquisition of GE licensing business solidifies DLB’s position in the imaging patents’ space.  THEO Technologies’ buyout in July 2024, worth $55 million, is aiding its Dolby.io offerings. With THEO, the company has been focusing on addressing the growing demand for designing customized experiences in sports and entertainment.

For the fiscal first quarter, DLB expects Licensing revenues to be in the range of $305 million to $335 million. Our estimate for the same is pegged at $319.5 million, up 8.8% on a year-over-year basis.

Dolby Laboratories Price and EPS Surprise

Global macroeconomic weakness and softness in device sales remain concerns. However, DLB expects device sales to be flattish while revenues from the foundational audio technology business to stabilize in the fiscal 2025.

On a GAAP basis, operating expenses are expected to be in the range of $230-$240 million, whereas, on a non-GAAP basis, the figure is anticipated to be between $190 million and $200 million.
