Reportedly, Facebook Inc. has collaborated with Univision Communications Inc. to live stream 46 Liga MX games for an undisclosed amount. Live streaming of these games (also the playoffs) will be available only in the U.S.
Media reports added that the matches will be live streamed on Univision Deportes’ Facebook page as well as the latter’s video tab but devoid of ads. Per media reports, this might be due to the fact that Facebook is still working out the live video ad model. The first match will be live streamed on Feb 18, 2016. Reportedly, in the U.S, Mexican Football commands more viewers than the English Premier League.
Facebook is aggressively promoting “Live” in order to boost its top line further. It intends to capture the opportunity presented by ever increasing video viewing on social media platforms. At its last earning call, Facebook said that video emerged as a “megatrend” on the same lines like mobile.
Last year, it signed deals with media houses and Internet celebrities to churn out more content for its live platform and added a host of new features to Facebook Live. Also, recently, it brought on board an ex-MTV executive, Mina Lefevre, to increase original live video content on the platform.
As video ads generate more revenues than its photo and text-based substitutes, Facebook is trying to incorporate more and more video oriented content to bring in more ad dollars. Ad revenues contribute over 90% to Facebook’s total revenue.
Also, streaming live sports is one of the most lucrative opportunities as it helps to boost engagement levels (especially millennials) and bring more advertisers. All social media sites are scrambling to get more and more sports oriented live streaming on their platform. Last year, Twitter outbid the likes of Facebook and Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) to get the rights of NFL. It further signed deals with other sports organizations like NBA and MLB. Last month, it struck a deal with the PGA.
At present, Facebook has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Moreover, we note that Facebook has outperformed the Zacks categorized Internet Services industry in the last one year. The company’s shares increased 31.50% compared with the industry’s gain of 17.80%.
In the trailing four quarters, Jabil recorded a positive average earnings surprise of 45.61%.
