Facebook Strikes Again with Third Snapchat Clone 'Messenger Day'

Read MoreHide Full Article

On Thursday, Facebook Inc. announced the global launch of its third Snapchat clone, dubbed Messenger Day. Users will now be able to post annotated pictures and videos within the Messenger app on iOS and Android that disappear after 24 hours, which is basically the same way Snapchat’s Stories platform works.

Messenger is one of the most successful messaging tools on the market today, and Messenger Day will likely boost that status. To add filters and effects, just tap the smiley face icon in the top right corner, or if you want to add text, just tap the “Aa” icon. Users can then share it to their “Day,” specific friends or groups of people, or save it to your camera roll. Messenger also allows users to add photos and videos to your Day from a current conversation you’re having.

Facebook is no stranger to copying Snapchat, Snap Inc.’s (SNAP - Free Report) premier social media smartphone app. The social networking giant owns Instagram, which employed its own successful version of Snapchat, also called Stories. Facebook recently debuted WhatsApp Status, a new feature to the messaging platform that lets users share photos videos in a montage format for up to 24 hours before they disappear.

When Snap held its initial public offering last week, concerns about its long-term growth potential were at the forefront of the biggest tech debut in years. And now that Facebook is successfully mimicking Snapchat’s most popular features across all of its platforms, investors should be rightfully worried if Snap can expand its user base.

Last week, Editor Maddy Johnson and Content Writer Ryan McQueeney, hosts of the Zacks Friday Finish Line podcast, previewed Snap’s IPO on their show. They were joined once again by Kathleen Smith, co-founder of Renaissance Capital, to discussSnapchat, and if it would live up to its high, and pricey, IPO expectations.
