McDonald's Will Use Fresh Beef in Quarter Pounders in 2018
Read MoreHide Full Article
McDonald’s (MCD - Free Report) is getting ready to revamp its popular Quarter Pounder, switching from frozen beef to fresh nationwide by the middle of next year after testing the decision in 325 locations across Texas and Oklahoma. The fast food company said the feedback was “overwhelmingly positive.”
The switch to fresh beef will just affect the Quarter Pounder, and other burgers like the Big Mac will still come with frozen beef.
This strategic shift is not the first time McDonald’s has made steps to improve its reputation as well as use more fresh ingredients. It’s already made a goal for itself to switch to cage free eggs by 2025, and has stopped using high-fructose corn syrup in its sandwich buns and las year, removed artificial preservatives from its Chicken McNuggets.
A move to fresh beef definitely heats up competition with rival Wendy’s (WEN - Free Report) , a fast food company that has built a name for itself by using fresh beef. For McDonald’s, this is also a chance to win back some customers who have turned to fast casual burger joints like Shake Shack (SHAK - Free Report) and Habit Restaurants , companies who serve “better” burgers with fresh beef and gourmet toppings.
“Today’s announcement is part of a continuing food journey for McDonald’s,” McDonald’s USA president Chris Kempczinski said in a written statement. “Over the last two years, we have accelerated the pace of change around how we source and serve our food. Delivering fresh beef that’s prepared when our customers order their food is just another example of how we are raising the bar. We’re just getting started, and can’twait to show you what’s next.”
