Facebook (FB) Messenger's "M" To Pop Up Suggestions Now

Read MoreHide Full Article

Facebook's artificial intelligence (AI) powered voice assistant, M for Messenger will now help users with suggestions to improve their communication experience on the app. For the time being, Suggestions from M will be available to users across United States, with global launch in the near term.

Per the blog post, M is capable of suggesting things “when it recognizes intent in a conversation” like suggesting stickers or paying/requesting money.  Moreover, M will help you get a cab by giving Lyft and Uber options if you talk about going somewhere. It will pop up suggestions to share your location and also help if people are making plans to get together. “And M learns: the more you use it, the more it can help. You always have the option to ignore or dismiss a suggestion if it’s not helpful, and if you don’t want M’s assistance you can easily mute it in M settings,” the blog post further added.

For Messenger users worldwide, Facebook updated the app so that they can now have better access to visual messaging tools as well as sending video and images from text with a long press. The new “more” tab will enable easy access to Games, Payments, Share Location and Rides, adds the blog post.

Touching upon the issue of protecting user information while talking to Recode, Facebook’s head of messaging products David Marcus was quoted saying, “These are private conversations and we take this very seriously.” Marcus added further that no human being will have access to the data sourced by AI.

Messenger is Facebook’s third platform with one billion plus users.  The social media platform is aggressively working on monetizing the opportunities presented by its subsidiaries. Chatbots and “conversational commerce” are likely to be the strategies for Messenger and WhatsApp. The company remains pretty excited as it opened the Messenger app to developers to create chatbots. These chatbots will enable businesses to extend customer service and other transactions. Chatbots is the new buzz word in the tech space as they could serve as a powerful strategy to monetize the platform.

Moreover, AR/VR is the next big technological innovation along with AI technology. According to a recent IDC report, global revenues of the AR/VR market are expected to grow at a CAGR of 198% from a period of 2015-2020 to $143.3 billion by 2020. Meanwhile, global revenues of the Cognitive & AI market are expected to grow at a CAGR of 54.4% to over $46 billion by 2020. As a result, not just Facebook, but all big tech behemoths, including Microsoft (MSFT - Free Report) , Alphabet Inc (GOOGL - Free Report) as well as Amazon.com Inc (AMZN - Free Report) , are trying to grab a share of this lucrative market.
