Earnings: Delta Air Lines’ earnings (excluding special items) of 77 cents per share beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 73 cents. Earnings, however, declined 41.7% on a year-over-year basis due to higher costs.
Revenue: Operating revenues came in at $9,148 million, below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $9,155.9 million. Revenues declined 1.1% from the year-ago figure.
Key Stats to Note: The airline behemoth witnessed a 0.5% decline in consolidated passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM: a key measure of unit revenue) in the reported quarter. For the second quarter of 2017, the carrier expects operating margin in the range of 17% to 19%. The estimated fuel price, including taxes and refinery impact, is expected in the range of $1.68 to $1.73 per gallon for the second quarter. System capacity is expected to be up 0% - 1% on a year over year basis. The company expects passenger unit revenue to increase in the band of 1% to 3% (on a year-over-year basis) in the second quarter. Cost per available seat mile, (including profit sharing) is expected to increase in the band of 6% to 8% in the second quarter.
Stock Price: The earnings beat pleased the investors. Shares of the company were up in pre-market trading at the time of writing.
