On today’s episode of Shopping for Stocks Editor Maddy Johnson details Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) Prime Day, the company’s online shopping extravaganza.
This year marks the third annual Prime Day for Amazon, and by now, the event has cemented itself as one of the biggest shopping days for the e-commerce giant. Last year, Prime Day led to the company’s biggest day ever, with customer orders surpassing Prime Day 2015 by over 60% worldwide and more than 50% in the U.S.
For 2017, the goal is to offer deals to “a record number of shoppers,” said Amazon Vice President Greg Greeley. That’s why sales started June 10 at 9 PM Eastern time and will stretch until 3 AM on July 12, turning Prime Day into Prime 30 hours.
Some of the best deals offered today include discounts on Alexa-enabled products, like the Echo, the Echo Dot, and the Amazon Tap. The Echo, for instance, is going for $89 today, or $90 off its original price. Amazon Fire tablets and Kindles are on sale today too.
Like anything Amazon does, Prime Day affected its peers in the retail industry. In particular, Macy’s (M - Free Report) and Dick’s Sporting Goods (DKS - Free Report) both closed down about 7% yesterday on anticipation for Prime Day.
