Nintendo (NTDOY) Falters With Preorders for SNES Classic
Read MoreHide Full Article
Nintendo Co Ltd (NTDOY - Free Report) is again drawing flak from fans for the chaotic way in which preorders of its much awaited console, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) Classic edition were locked in.
Per media reports, yesterday, retailers like Amazon (AMZN - Free Report) and Best Buy (BBY - Free Report) started taking preorders without any intimation. Best Buy started taking preorders at 1.30 A.M. ET while Amazon went live at around 5.00 A.M. ET. Wal-Mart and Target Corp went live a little later in the day but again with no prior intimation.
However, reportedly, GameStop (GME - Free Report) announced that it was going to start taking preorders at 1.00 P.M. ET. Sadly, this wasn’t of any help as the site crashed due to heavy traffic. It was learnt later that the sixth retailer Toys "R" Us wasn’t going to take any preorders for SNES. Reportedly, Nintendo has collaborated with these six retailers to sell SNES Classic edition consoles.
The consoles were immediately sold out. Most of the fans were caught off guard given the odd hours and the lack of any intimation. Nintendo loyalists thus ended up having a rough day.
Nintendo seemingly is yet to learn from the NES Classic fiasco that occurred last year. Betting big on nostalgia, Nintendo revived NES almost 20 years after discontinuing it. Upon release, NES Mini met with tremendous response from the gaming community. However, Nintendo faltered as there was limited inventory causing massive supply shortages. Fans were extremely irate. NES Mini, which went on sale in fall 2016, was abruptly discontinued earlier this year in spite of immense popularity.
Given the debacle, the company, back then, had issued a statement promising to produce significantly more units of SNES Classic Edition than it did of NES Classic Edition until the end of calendar year 2017. Unfortunately, Nintendo again failed to have a smooth beginning.
Nintendo fans still have a chance to buy SNES mini when it hits stores on Sep 29, 2017. However, analysts expect supply to be “extremely limited.”
We can only hope that this time around Nintendo must have learnt its lesson and there will be adequate inventory to meet the demand. Nintendo does not need any more bad press for SNES Classic. It is to be noted that in July due to a “technical glitch” SNES Classic was erroneously made available on Wal-Mart for pre-orders. After the detection of the error, all the orders were cancelled igniting extensive criticism.
Nintendo has had a dream run since last year when the augmented reality game Pokémon Go became a worldwide sensation. After that Nintendo saw success with both NES Mini and Switch consoles. As a result, over the past one year, shares have vastly outperformed the Industry. While the stock returned 47.9%, the industry gained 36.1%.
Nintendo’s upcoming second-generation machine reflects the company’s smart initiative to cash in on its yesteryear gaming successes. Nintendo is a pioneer in the field of video gaming, riding on the back of its characters – Mario, Pokémon, Zelda and others. It is worth mentioning that the original SNES, launched in 1990, sold over 49 million units globally.
The SNES micro-console features a suite of 21 preloaded fan favorites games such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country and Mega Man X.
Alongside the classic titles, Nintendo will also bundle in an unreleased sequel with the original space-fighting game Star Fox. Worldwide release of Star Fox 2 is one of the most attractive additions to the package.
Tech stocks have been a major force behind the market’s record highs, but picking the best ones to buy can be tough. There’s a simple way to invest in the success of the entire sector. Zacks has just released a Special Report revealing one thing tech companies literally cannot function without. More importantly, it reveals 4 top stocks set to skyrocket on increasing demand for these devices. I encourage you to get the report now – before the next wave of innovations really takes off.
