If you want to see which companies are the top corporate citizens of 2019, all you need to do is check out Corporate Responsibility Magazine’s newly released, 20th annual, list of the top 100 such companies. Taking a closer look with me now is Robbie Lock, Executive Director of 3BL Media, which publishes CR Magazine.
1. Your magazine started this ranking back in 1999, when the corporate citizenship concept hadn’t yet really taken hold. Why did you think it was important to do back then vs waiting until the concept became more mainstream?
2. Research is conducted by ISS-ESG, the investment research arm of Institutional Shareholder Services. What are the criteria that gets ranked that you feel underscores good corporate citizenship for purposes of this ranking?
3. How many factors are considered in your ranking?
4. What is the total possible score a company can get?
5. Has any company achieved that perfect score over the years?
6. The ranking uses only information from publicly-available sources. There’s no application or questionnaire for companies to fill out. Is that what keeps this objective?
7. Is this a pure ranking for ranking’s sake or can you extract any trends from your research?
8. Today companies take corporate citizenship much more seriously. It’s more than just the theory it may have started as. Do you think your magazines ranking this for the past 20 years has had a hand in bringing it to a real practice for companies and not just a theory?
9. You only rank Russell 1000 companies. Why is that?
