Amerisafe’s operating revenues decreased 2% from the prior-year quarter to $93 million and missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.7%.

Gross written premiums in the quarter were down 4.4% year over year to $93.1 million, primarily due to lower voluntary premiums written, partly offset by increase in payroll audits.

Net investment income increased 11.2% year over year to $8 million, owing to higher yields on investment securities.

Total expenses came in at $71.4 million, down 4.5% from the year-ago quarter, thanks to lower loss and loss adjustments incurred and policyholder dividends. Net combined ratio, a measure of profitability (lower the better), was 84% compared with 85.6% in the year-ago quarter.

Financial Update

Amerisafe exited the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $34.8 million, down 13.6% from year-end 2018 levels.

As of Mar 31, 2019, total shareholders’ equity was $1.6 billion, up 6.67% year over year.

Operating return on equity was 16.9%, up 150 basis points (bps) year over year.

Book value per share as of Mar 31, 2019, was $22.33, down 0.4% year over year.
