Currently the company primarily operates through three business segments – Electric Utilities and Infrastructure, Gas Utilities and Infrastructure, and Other.
The Electric Utilities and Infrastructure segment provides retail electric service through the generation, transmission, distribution and sale of electricity to approximately 8.4 million customers within the Southeast and Midwest regions of the United States. The service territory is approximately 90,000 square miles across six states with a total estimated population of 27 million. This segment’s revenues in 2023 came in at $26,617 million, comprising 91.6% of the total revenues.
The Gas Utilities and Infrastructure segment conducts natural gas operations primarily through the regulated public utilities of Piedmont, Duke Energy Ohio and Duke Energy Kentucky. It has more than 1.7 million total customers, including approximately 1.2 million customers located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, and an additional 560,000 customers located within southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky. This segment’s revenues in 2023 were $2,152 million, comprising 7.4% of the total revenues.
The remaining operations under Duke Energy are classified as Other. It includes interest expense on holding company debt, unallocated corporate costs, certain income tax amounts, amounts related to certain companywide initiatives and contributions made to the Duke Energy Foundation. The Duke Energy Foundation is a nonprofit organization funded by Duke Energy shareholders that makes charitable contributions to selected nonprofits and government subdivisions.
