Notably, Imperial Oil is the subsidiary of one the world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas company Exxon Mobil Corporation which holds 69.6% ownership stake.
The company primarily operates under three segments: Upstream, Downstream and Chemical.
Upstream: The upstream unit of the company is involved in the exploration and production of crude and synthetic oil, bitumen and natural gas. As of year-end 2023, Imperial Oil had a proved reserve base of 2,175 million oil equivalent barrels (90% proved developed). Imperial Oil primarily focuses on three main assets in Alberta - the Syncrude oil sands joint venture with Suncor Energy, the Aspen, and the Kearl oil sands projects. The company produces around 400,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day from these properties. Imperial Oil's upstream assets have a proved reserve life of nearly 30 years and have generated more than $16 billion in cash over the last ten years. The upstream segment contributed around 22% of the company’s 2023 revenues. In 2023, production averaged 360 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBOE/d), of which more than 95% were liquids.
Downstream: The downstream segment deals with the refining of crude oil along with distribution and marketing of refined products. Imperial Oil owns and operates three refineries in Canada, with combined refining capacity of 423,000 barrels per day. Additionally, the unit is engaged with the selling of petroleum products under the Esso and Mobil brands, with more than 1,800 retail sites. This segment was responsible for 76% of the total revenues last year.
Chemical: The Chemical segment is concerned with the manufacture and marketing of various petrochemicals including plasticizers, polyethylene resins, benzene among others. The unit accounted for just 2% of the company’s 2023 revenues.
